What a Release!

My first game jam! How'd it go?

As an Ipad kid, I've always seen videos about making games for game jams and I've always wanted to give it a go! Now that I'm developing, I forgot about this dream. Thanks to my Twitter having a bunch of game dev news, I saw the Pirate Software Jam.

I went full throttle on this.

I half announced this on my Twitter but was otherwise silent. I NEEDED to make something great. So, I immediately started writing my Game Design Document. I didn't even give my close friends a build until I was CERTAIN I had something I was proud of.

I shared an artwork for one of the endings with some friends and a short video of concept mechanics with some friends and the Pirate Software discord server and got a positive reaction. This is the most artistically polished game I've made so far, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Something bugs me though...

This section spoils the game, so if you haven't played it, it only takes like 15 minutes MAX. You have no excuse!

That being said, I have some problems with the gameplay. I thought the game would take much longer to make, so I kept the mechanics VERY simple. I have been the victim of creature creep for TOO LONG, and I refused to let that ruin the idea of the game. I restricted myself a little too much though, mostly with the camera. It occurred to me while watching one of my friends playtest that the camera is only used ONCE, and it is OPTIONAL. At this point, the game was already in its final stage of development, so adding a new mini-game to utilize the camera was basically off the table.

What do you think? Would the camera be a better mechanic if it was utilized prior to the meeting? Does it reward the player by being the only way to get the good ending?
